Mark was unable to get Slipher Whitman’s crazy theory out of his mind. The image of Ursavus staring knowingly at him through the pane of glass haunted him. In his dreams Ursavus became Ursus minimus, much the same, but fiercer, stronger, more intelligent, cunning, and possessing a terrible, malign purpose. He moaned frequently at night, and Phyllis grew increasingly worried. She pressed him for an explanation, but he insisted he had none. He didn’t want to tell that he had met Slipher Whitman.

At work, Mark began to requisition copies of police reports on every kind of anomalous incident he could think of during the preceding three quarters. A more scrupulous police department would have noticed the nature and volume of his requests and reported them to the mayor. Fortunately, the Piketon department under Delbert Pickel preferred to practice a policy of live and let live. Eventually, Mark was doing little else but scanning such reports. This went on for the last two weeks of January. The number of reports generated within the period of a mere nine months in a city of Piketon’s size stupefied him.

He came at last across the details of the grisly deaths of the Davis family in their station wagon in an alley on North Hill, and he stopped, sure somehow that this was at least a part of the puzzle. Then he noticed that the report was signed by Phyllis Ortiveda and Sam Henderson, and an inexplicable shiver ran down his spine.
